THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating first encounter between Elina Svitolina and Naomi Osaka since the pair became mothers last year. Former world number three Svitolina returned to tour last summer with a remarkable, rapid rise back up the rankings thanks to deep runs at Wimbledon and the US Open and she began 2024 in much the same vein, finishing runner-up to Coco Gauff at the Auckland Classic before a round of 16 exit at the Australian Open in January.
Former number one Osaka made her return from a long hiatus at the start of this season, initially struggling with a series of tough draws before proving herself well capable of following Svitolina back up to the top with a quarter-final exit at the Qatar Masters. A straight-sets victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Wednesday was a solid start to her Miami campaign but Svitolina, who is back up to world number 17 at present, is the slight favourite as the player fully plugged back into toe WTA tour mainframe. The pair share a 3-3 head-to-head but this could be a thrilling edition as Osaka faces an all-new, more aggressive version of the Ukrainian. Back Svitolina to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
