World number 66 Mayar Sherif conceded just three games to home hopeful Aya El Aouni on Tuesday to build on her excellent recent form on her favoured clay. The 28-year-old reached the third round of the Madrid Open with victory over 25th seed Marta Kostyuk and she stunned 11th seed Jasmine Paolini in Rome to do the same, just missing out to Victoria Azarenka in three tight sets.
Two second place finishes at quality Challenger events on the surface, either side of Rome, suggests the Egyptian is a genuine contender in Rabat but world number 83 Maria Carle beat fifth seed Arantxa Rus in straight sets on Tuesday to stake a claim. The 24-year-old enjoyed the biggest run of her career so far in Madrid, upsetting Emma Raducanu and Veronika Kudermetova before an exit to ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko, but in-form Sherif should be too steep of a challenge.
Back Sherif to win outright, although straight sets should do it with the North African crowd behind her.
