30-year-old Marcos Giron set a career-high ATP world ranking of 44th in February after an excellent spell of form on US soil, finishing runner-up to Tommy Paul at the Dallas Open before a semi0final exit to Delray Beach champion Taylor Fritz, and a return to Texas served him well on Monday in a straight-sets victory over Denis Shapovalov. The current number 51 snapped a three-match losing streak with that eye-catching result and he looks well capable of rolling through to the quarter-finals against an out-of-sorts J.J. Wolf, who is far from the player who broke the top 40 early last season. The 25-year-old grabbed his first win of the year in three sets over Alexander Ritschard, hopefully boosting some shot confidence, but Giron has won all three of their previous matches – including at tour-level in Auckland last season. Back Giron to win outright.
