THE PREDICTION
This will be a really interesting first tour-level meeting between two 22 year olds with a similar story. Juan Manuel Cerundolo set a career-high ATP world ranking of 79th after winning the 2021 Cordoba Open on his ATP tour debut, stunning the tennis world before promptly disappearing off into the relative void of the Challenger circuit. The Argentine came back from a set down to upset Yannick Hanfmann on Tuesday for one of his better results in recent years but he faces the current Cordoba champion, Luciano Darderi, who won his maiden ATP title this month in only his third tour-level campaign. The Italian beat Hanfmann, Sebastian Baez and then Facundo Bagnis in the final to set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 76th and he beat Bagnis again here on Wednesday, via three fierce tiebreaks, to look the favourite on recent form. Cerundolo bested Darderi in qualifying in Rio last weekend but the Italian’s performances at this level across the South American swing say he can edge this rematch. Back Darderi to reach the quarter-finals.
TIP: LUCIANO DARDERI TO WIN
