Top seed Jessica Pegula beat Magda Linette comfortably on Thursday to look increasingly like she has rediscovered her mojo on tour. The world number five ended last season with a remarkable run to the WTA Finals, beating four top 10 players including Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka before falling to world number one Iga Swiatek but she began 2024 in a surprising malaise. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka came back from a set down to oust an impressive Taylor Townsend on Thursday but she will have to be tighter to oust Pegula, who gives up far fewer chances. Azarenka has started 2024 in excellent form, and she leads Pegula 3-2 at tour-level, but Pegula has been outspoken in her love of the conditions here in Charleston and she will be backed to the hilt as the home favourite.
