THE PREDICTION

World number seven Holger Rune overcame an in-form Grigor Dimitrov in three sets on Thursday, via two tight tiebreaks, to continue an encouraging start to the clay swing. The 20-year-old finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev here last season, at the peak of his powers, but he has struggled to find anything like his best tennis since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer.

World number two Jannik Sinner lost to Alcaraz in the following round at SW19 before seeing his promising career totally flourish across the hardcourt swing, winning the Canada Masters, Beijing Open, Vienna Open, Rotterdam Open, Miami Masters and, most impressively, his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The Italian won his only clay-court title at Alcaraz’ expense in Umag back in 2022 but he looks much improved in the surface so far in Monte-Carlo, blasting past tough opponents in Sebastian Korda and Jan-Lennard Struff. Rune leads their head-to-head 2-1, beating the Italian from a set down in the semi-finals here last season, but back the imperious Italian to level things here.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
