THE PREDICTION

This could end up a fascinating clash between former number five Sara Errani, a popular home favourite here in Rome, and former number three Elina Svitolina, who trails the Italian 0-2 in their head-to-head. 29-year-old Svitolina was 21 when she las met Errani way back in 2016, losing in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, and a first win in this match-up looks more than likely on paper.

36-year-old Errani, however, has been enjoying something of a renaissance on clay so far this season, reaching the semi-finals of the Bogota Open last month and stunning Caroline Wozniacki from a set down in the first round of the Madrid Open two weeks ago. Her best win yet came on Thursday, though, when she once again came back from a set down to stun the returning Amanda Anisimova in three sets to delight raucous home support.

A first win at the Italian Masters since 2015 should bring plenty of attention to this nostalgic clash with world number 19 Svitolina and the Ukrainian’s two-match losing streak on clay suggests more than a spot of jeopardy. Svitolina should have enough to avoid an upset here but with an outright call the sensible move consider taking Errani to snatch at least a set, fuelled by a fierce Pietrangeli crowd.

TIP: ELINA SVITOLINA TO WIN
