THE PREDICTION
World number 52 Jasmine Paolini is the last Italian standing in Palermo after a comeback victory over Dayana Yastremska on Thursday. The 27-year-old has seen sets go both ways in her first two rounds but she will do well to take one here against world number 11 Daria Kasatkina. 26-year-old Kasatkina conceded just four games to Tatiana Prozorova on Thursday after a much tougher opener against former world number 18 Martina Trevisan and she will be desperate to take full advantage of this wide open draw after some recent early exits on tour. Notably, Paolini leads the Russian 2-1 at tour-level in their head-to-head and all three of their previous meetings have come on clay, including a three-set victory for the Italian here in 2020. Kasatkina should have far too many weapons to be upset here but home advantage could help a spirited battler in Paolini make things very interesting. Take Kasatkina to win outright for caution’s sake or consider at least a set for Paolini.
