World number 48 Danielle Collins has played very well since announcing that 2024 will be her last as a professional tennis player. The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries and other physical issues for much of her career and it is very like her character to decide on one last full-throttle season instead of a managed decline through her 30s. A run to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters two weeks ago saw victories over top 30 quality in Maria Bouzkova, Veronika Kudermetova and Katerina Siniakova but her defeats have impressed too, taking both Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina to three sets in 2024. World number 112 Katie Volynets is a player with top 40 potential at least but the 22-year-old looks set to struggle in this first encounter with the former number seven. A straight-sets victory over Renata Zarazua built on some solid recent form off the tour but back Collins to blast through in straight sets as she targets a first title since 2021.
