THE LOWDOWN

30-year-old Danielle Collins put in another searing performance to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets on Thursday, reaching her first ever Masters final and at her home tournament here in Miami. The Florida native will be backed to the hilt and then some in this likely thriller on Saturday as she faces an out-of-sorts, although still imperious, Elena Rybakina for the fourth time since the start of last season. World number four Rybakina won each of those last three, taking a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head, but in three sets apiece to prove Collins has significant skin in this game and the American, who is retiring at the end of the season, will leave nothing out on court – probably preferring victory here in Miami and several months away injured to missing out and playing the clay swing. 24-year-old Rybakina has won two titles already this season, including at Abu Dhabi after coming back from a set down to Collins last month, but she has claimed just one straight-sets result this campaign to look a little fragile mentally – with a 0-6 bagel suffered against Victoria Azarenka on Thursday suggesting Collins can enjoy a famous day.

THE PREDICTION

Rybakina lost this final to an inspired Petra Kvitova 12 months ago and she was beaten in straight sets in the Dubai Masters final last month as she continues to fluctuate between her near-impenetrable best and an occasional brittleness that can be pounced upon by top players and partisan crowds alike. The Kazakh is the favourite on merit, ability and overall form this season but Collins has home advantage and her notorious grit to make this a tough call between head and heart. Collins has lost just one of her three finals, to then world number one Ash Barty at the Australian Open, whilst Rybakina actually owns a losing record of 7-10, with a 2-2 record this season offering further hope for home fans. Back Collins to crown her last season on tour with a lifetime achievement.

TIP: DANIELLE COLLINS TO WIN
