World number 66 Christopher O’Connell came through his opening Miami match with Vit Kopriva comfortably on Wednesday and he will back himself to cause trouble here against an out-of-sorts Frances Tiafoe. 26-year-old Tiafoe dropped outside of the top 20 this week, for the first time since late 2022, as his poor stretch of form continues in 2024 but the American should be able to find a semblance of a spark on the big stage here in Miami. A raucous partisan home support in what looks set to be a late match should suit the popular showman to a tee, particularly as we can expect humid conditions on Friday, but taking Tiafoe to win outright is the suitably cautious call as O’Connell will be well aware of his opponents’ current fragility.
