THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Casper Ruud already has more wins on hardcourts than he managed in the entirety of last season, beating Dusan Lajovic in straight sets late on Wednesday to continue good progress on the surface. The 25-year-old has all the qualities required to excel in these conditions but he recently admitted to going back to the drawing board on hardcourts, with last week’s straight-sets semi-final victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Los Cabos suggesting that doing so has worked. World number 17 Ben Shelton will be his toughest fixture this week but the American has dropped sets in two erratic matches so far in Acapulco, coming back from a set down to sneak past Dan Evans before a slightly easier time of it in three against Matteo Arnaldi. The 21-year-old looks set to be a dominant force in these conditions one day, with last summer’s run to the semi-finals of the US Open for proof, but he has looked a little shaky so far this season to make backing Ruud to win at least a set the suitably cautious way to avoid a result.
