THE PREDICTION
World number eight Casper Ruud needed three sets to see off a valiant effort by young Luca Van Assche on Saturday but he should be better for an early scare in Miami. The 25-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz here two years ago, the same season he came second to the Spaniard at the US Open, and he looks to have rediscovered his methods for hardcourts after losing his way on the surface last year. A quarter-final exit to Tommy Paul at Indian Wells last week says he will have to improve to emulate his best run here and this looks a serious test already against world number 28 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, to whom he trails 1-2 in their head-to-head. 24-year-old Davidovich Fokina avoided an early upset with a strong straight-sets victory over up-and-coming Jerry Shang on Saturday and he will back himself in this match-up after winning each of his last two meetings with Ruud, the most recent of which was a three-set epic en-route to the semi-finals of the Canada Masters last August.
All three of their meetings have gone to tight deciding sets, including twice to five sets at the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals and at Roland-Garros two years later, with at least two tiebreaks in each match. This offers plenty of options for combinations here but, given his recent results, taking Ruud to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors seems the most sensible way to lean inside an accumulator. Otherwise, consider taking the match to see three sets and at least one tiebreak.
