THE PREDICTION
This will be an interesting throwback clash between former world number three Sloane Stephens and former number 11 Ana Sevastova, with the most recent of their four previous encounters going the Latvian’s way in 2018. 30-year-old Stephens beat Sevastova in the quarter-finals of the 2017 US Open en-route to her maiden Grand Slam title but she has struggled to compete at that level in recent seasons, with 2022’s run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros her last real flourish. The American handily beat Tereza Martincova in straight sets on Tuesday but she has won back-to-back matches just once since the US Open last summer as she continues to struggle with consistency. 33-year-old Sevastova reached the quarter-finals of the Transylvania Open on her return to the WTA tour from maternity leave earlier this month and she looks a real threat after starting strong on Tuesday in Austin. The sensible call is backing Stephens to win at least a set, particularly on home soil, but that in turn suggests a one-off on Sevastova to snatch one of her own could be the shrewd way to avoid a result here.
TIP: ANASTASIJA SEVASTOVA TO WIN A SET
