THE PREDICTION

World number nine Hubert Hurkacz beat Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets at the Marseille Open last month but he has struggled to assert himself since defeat to Ugo Humbert in the semi-finals there, with each of his last three defeats coming in tight three-setters. The 27-year-old should be considered a genuine dark horse here in Miami, though, after claiming his first Masters title here back in 2021 and he proved his efficacy at this level late last season by claiming his second ATP 1000 trophy in Shanghai.

World number 58 Shevchenko came back from a set down to beat Daniel Elahi Galan in very tight circumstances, doing well to recover from an injury that saw him pull out of this stage at Indian Wells two weeks ago. The 23-year-old has enjoyed an excellent past 12 months on tour, reaching his maiden tour final in Metz last November before finishing runner-up to the aforementioned Humbert, but recent results have been rather laboured. Hurkacz should be dominating this encounter in straight sets but the Pole is no stranger to long periods of letting matches get to a deciding set. Take the former champion to win outright for caution’s sake and consider adding a tiebreak outside of an accumulator.

TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN
