Still under the management of Julen Lopetegui, Qatar head into the Arabian Gulf Cup on the back of a woeful FIFA World Cup in which they conceded nine goals against Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina after a shock and undeserved 1-1 draw versus Switzerland.

Bahrain most recently succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Georgia in June, with that being their only game in 2025 since being knocked out of a group that consisted of Iraq, Algeria and Sudan at the FIFA Arab Cup in December.

Bahrain have only beaten Sudan and Djibouti since winning the 76th Arabian Gulf Cup with a victory over Oman in January 2025. Bahrain are defending champions but are in a tough position to even get through the group stages this time around with stronger sides named by the leading lights of the competition, such as Qatar.
