Panna Udvardy pulled off an upset on the opening day of the Libema Open as she beat top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Hungarian comfortably went ahead after the first set and recovered from a break down in the second to serve for the match at 5-4. Alexandrova would break back, but the comeback was short-lived as Udvardy won the final three points of the tiebreak to claim a 6-4 7-6 (5) victory.
She now takes on Daria Snigur after the Ukrainian defeated Paula Badosa in straight sets. Badosa was making her latest comeback, having not featured since the Madrid Open, but made a slow start as Snigur raced clear in the first set. Badosa was far more competitive in the second as she opened up a 5-3 lead. However, she spurned a set point and was broken in the very next game, with Snigur dominating the tiebreak to win 6-1 7-6 (1).
Both of these players are coming off strong showings in the previous round, but Snigur is improving on a consistent basis.
