This is an intriguing contest in Athens, albeit with very little riding on it, as Rafa Benitez’ Panathinaikos take on Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma in Greece this week.

Key stats

  • The only previous UEFA meetings between the two sides came in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32, where Panathinaikos won 3-2 in both legs to advance 6-4 on aggregate.
  • Panathinaikos have lost only three of their previous 12 UEFA matches at home against Italian teams (W5 D4).
  • Panathinaikos have lost only two of their last 12 UEFA matches (W4 D6) and are unbeaten in their most recent four outings (W2 D2).
  • Roma have won two, lost two and drawn four of their eight previous UEFA meetings with Greek opposition. This is their first such encounter since facing Panathinaikos in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32.
  • Roma have won their last four UEFA Europa League matches, keeping three clean sheets in the process.
  • Roma have won their previous three away matches in the league phase of this season’s UEFA Europa League.

Panathinaikos vs Roma prediction

Panathinaikos have been steady since the appointment of Rafa Benitez. They sit firmly in the middle of the 36-team UEFA Europa League league phase table with a miracle required to get into the top eight but assured of finishing in the top 24 ahead of the final match day.

Roma are in a bit more of a precarious position to try and remain in the top eight. The Giallorossi could be caught by a few sides but the buffer between them and the rest could help. They most recently shared a 1-1 draw with AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A the other day.

Roma have more to play for here and, such is the conservative nature of Rafa Benitez, the hosts may well rotate here and so siding with the Romans is the way to go.

Panathinaikos vs Roma tip: Roma to win & under 3.5 goals
