Newcastle United still have a chance to qualify for the top eight in the UEFA Champions League as the Magpies take on Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park.

Kick-off date/time:

How to watch on TV: UK – TNT Sports / US – Not televised

How to watch online: UK – discovery+ / US – Paramount+

Newcastle preview: Inconsistent Newcastle

Eddie Howe has been heavily criticised by Newcastle United supporters throughout this season, despite the impressive job that he has done on Tyneside, with the Magpies being far too inconsistent for their high expectations.

Their inconsistency has continued into 2026 with Newcastle beginning the year with a couple of victories in the league, a penalty shootout win in the FA Cup, an EFL Cup semi-final first-leg loss and then a goalless draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

PSV preview: A tough PSV

Coached by the always attacking and often tactically naïve Peter Bosz, PSV Eindhoven are back-to-back Eredivisie champions and they are a dangerous side in the UEFA Champions League, too, as they chase a top 24 finish.

Their standout result came in late-November as they hammered Liverpool by four goals to one at Anfield but PSV then succumbed to an unfortunate 3-2 loss at home to Atletico Madrid to mean they have won two, drawn two and lost two of their six games.

Newcastle team news: Defensive injuries

Newcastle are dealing with plenty of defensive injury issues for this one as Fabian Schar and Dan Burn remain sidelined alongside versatile full-back Tino Livramento.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Barnes, Woltemade, Gordon

Unavailable: Lascelles (Injured), Schar (Injured), Burn (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Murphy (Injured)

Questionable: Osula (Injured)

PSV team news: Attacking injuries

Fulham target Ricardo Pepi is sidelined through injury for PSV alongside fellow attackers Ryan van Bommel, Myron Boadu and Alassane Plea, while Ismael Saibari could return from the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in time for the game but he is already missing through suspension anyway.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kovar; Sildillia, Schouten, Gasiorowski, Junior; Veerman, Wanner; Perisic, Gil, Bajraktarevic; Driouech

Unavailable: Saibari (Suspended), Olij (Injured), Van Bommel (Injured), Boadu (Injured), Plea (Injured), Pepi (Injured)

Questionable: Salah-Eddine (International duty)

Newcastle vs PSV prediction

Newcastle are often a completely different team when they are playing in front of the loud and hostile atmosphere of St James’ Park, and expectation is that this, their final game in the league phase with a chance of a top eight finish, will be a raucous crowd. PSV, though, will believe they can play efficiently on the counter-attack against the often overwhelmed hosts and both teams scoring seems a good bet.

Newcastle vs PSV Tip: Both teams to score
