Newcastle United could do with putting in a good performance and getting a good result at St James’ Park this weekend as the Magpies welcome a strong Brentford side.

Newcastle preview: Mid-table Magpies

Newcastle United come into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the second-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, completing a 5-1 aggregate loss and ending the defence of their trophy.

That loss means that the Magpies have now managed just one victory inside 90 minutes in their last eight games across all competitions, which is adding pressure to manager Eddie Howe.

Brentford preview: Bees push for Europe

It has been a surprisingly impressive campaign for Brentford and Keith Andrews, with the Bees beginning this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top seven and the European spots.

The Bees come into this one on the back of another impressive result as, down to ten men after the sending off of Kevin Schade, they squeezed out a 1-0 win away at Aston Villa, courtesy of a Dango Ouattara winner.

Newcastle team news: Hopeful Howe

Eddie Howe has said that Brazil international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes trained earlier in the week and the manager said that his fingers were crossed with regards to him being fit for this weekend.

Anthony Gordon went off against Liverpool with a hamstring injury that isn't expected to be serious but he is expected to be unavailable for this one, while Lewis Miley will 'hopefully be back soon'.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey; Elanga, Wissa, Barnes

Unavailable: Schar (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Miley (Injured), Joelinton (Injured)

Questionable: Guimaraes (Injured), Gordon (Injured)

Brentford team news: Schade suspended

Germany international attacker Kevin Schade is missing through suspension for Brentford this weekend, while Kaye Furo and Reiss Nelson could come back into contention.

Keith Andrews said that Nathan Collins was benched last weekend due to him needing some stitches after training and so the Irishman could start once again this weekend.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Kayode, Van den Bergh, Collins, Henry; Janelt, Yarmolyuk; Ouattara, Jensen, Lewis-Potter; Thiago

Unavailable: Milambo (Injured), Dasilva (Injured), Carvalho (Injured), Schade (Suspended)

Questionable:

Newcastle vs Brentford prediction

Following the departures of manager Thomas Frank as well as several key players last summer, Brentford have surprised many by launching a genuine push for European football this season. They face a Newcastle side that could do with rediscovering that chaotic spark that often made them so difficult to play against. Both teams scoring would seem a reasonable shout for this one on Tyneside.
