Perhaps the standout encounter from this Premier League weekend, Newcastle United take on an Arsenal side that need a win for their title challenge at St James’ Park.

Newcastle preview: Finding fluency

Newcastle United, following the long summer saga over the future of Alexander Isak, have endured a difficult start to the season in terms of goal scoring with three goalless draws on the road highlighting the lack of attacking threat.

The Magpies did manage to hit four in midweek, though, as they defeated League One leaders Bradford City by four goals to one at St James’ Park in midweek in the third round of the EFL Cup, courtesy of braces from Joelinton and Will Osula.

Arsenal preview: Gunning for more

Arsenal have already dropped five points in the Premier League this season after a heavy summer of spending over the summer to try and finally win the league title once again, as well as competing an all four fronts.

In terms of winning some silverware, the Gunners got themselves off the mark in the EFL Cup the other day as they defeated Port Vale by two goals to nil at Vale Park in the third round thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Leandro Trossard.

Newcastle team news: Murphy & Gordon available

Ahead of the visit of Arsenal this weekend, Newcastle have 'no major concerns' according to Eddie Howe, following on from their victory over Bradford City in the EFL Cup.

That means that Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon are both available for this one, whilst Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa are sidelined for the Magpies ahead of the visit of the Gunners.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Pope; Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Livramento, Tonali, Miley, Hall; Murphy, Willock; Woltemade

Unavailable: Schar (Concussion), Ramsey (Injured), Wissa (Injured)

Questionable:

Arsenal team news: Odegaard a doubt

Martin Odegaard is working his way back to full fitness for this weekend and the Norway international midfielder should train beforehand, but he remains a doubt ahead of the trip.

Noni Madueke will now be sidelined for the visitors for this one, as he is injured for a couple of months due to a knee injury. Bukayo Saka, though, is expected to start.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Zubimendi, Merino; Saka, Gyokeres, Eze

Unavailable: Hincapie (Injured), Havertz (Injured), Madueke (Injured), Jesus (Injured)

Questionable: Odegaard (Injured)

Newcastle vs Arsenal prediction

Newcastle United will believe that the home atmosphere of being up for a big team coming to Tyneside will help spur their faltering attack on, as was almost the case against Barcelona but, again, they lacked that finishing touch in the final third. Arsenal have matured and been able to physically deal with every side, but scoring goals in big games is also an issue for the Gunners, and so a low-scoring encounter seems a good bet.

Newcastle vs Arsenal tip: Under 3.5 goals
