Mexico preview: Impressive in the groups
Mexico enjoyed an extremely impressive FIFA World Cup group stage campaign as they earned three wins from three to win Group A, keeping three successive clean sheets. In his third stint in charge, there had been some scepticism over former Real Mallorca boss Javier Aguirre but supporters are getting on side now.
The Mexicans defeated South Africa by two goals to nil in their opener with goals from star attackers Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez before Luis Romo punished a Kim Seung-gyu mistake to give the Mexicans a 1-0 victory against Korea Republic. They then rotated and managed to hammer Czechia by three goals to nil last week, with Quinones scoring his second goal in-between strikes from Mateo Chavez and Spain-born Alvaro Fidalgo.
Ecuador preview: Finding their way through
Sebastian Beccacece and his Ecuador side were viewed by many as serious ‘dark horses’ for this tournament, having finished second in CONMEBOL qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026 - only behind Argentina - and conceding just five goals in their 18 qualifying matches.
The Ecuadoreans’ defensive strength was on show in a frustrating 1-0 loss against Cote d’Ivoire and then a goalless draw with Curacao in their opening couple of games but attacking limitations appeared to be undermining them to the point of group stage elimination. However, they came from a goal down to defeat Germany by two goals to one to send them through, with Gonzalo Plata scoring a crucial late winner.

Javier Aguirre made some changes for Mexico’s 3-0 defeat of Czechia but El Tri will now return to being full strength with no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues to deal with ahead of the knockout stage.
The big decision will come in midfield with Erick Lira likely to keep his spot in defensive midfield, ahead of captain Edson Alvarez. There is also a debate about the right-wing berth, with Santiago Gimenez pushing for a start ahead of Roberto Alvarado, but the latter remains favourite.

Enner Valencia is a legendary figure in Ecuadorean football but there is a feeling that Kevin Rodriguez, impressive off the bench against Germany, may now come into the eleven, with Moises Caicedo having taken over the captaincy from the former West Ham United striker.
The all-action style of both Pedro Vite and Alan Franco has been key for Ecuador, with both seemingly playing at wing-back and in midfield. There doesn’t appear to be any injury issues for the South Americans to contend with.

Mexico vs Ecuador prediction
Mexico were booed and jeered by their supporters in their opening game as their fans wanted them to rack up the score against South Africa, but their 3-0 victory against Czechia appears to have eased the criticism somewhat.
Ecuador were impressive in their performance levels throughout the group stages. They were very good against the Ivorians but hit the woodwork three times to eventually lose, while Eloy Room of Curacao set the record for the most saves in a FIFA World Cup match inside 90 minutes.
Ecuador will remain extremely awkward to play against and difficult to beat, especially with the high stakes of knockout football, while Mexico’s preferred style also leans towards conservatism under Aguirre so a low-scoring clash in the Round of 32 seems likely for this one.
