Mayar Sherif extended her winning run to 12 matches as she comfortably swept aside Elsa Jacquemot in straight sets. The Egyptian needed three hours and 17 minutes to get past Simona Waltert in round one, but this was a far more comfortable outing for Sherif as she won 6-2 6-3, creating 14 break point opportunities in total.
She will face former world number two Paula Badosa for the second time in just four days as the Spaniard got past Panna Udvardy in straight sets. Badosa struggled on serve in the first set as she was broken on three separate occasions, but she managed to create chances in her return games and eventually took the lead. The second was far more straight-forward, with Badosa winning 6-4 6-1.
This is a rematch of the final of the Iasi Open, which saw Sherif win after Badosa retired in the second set. This is the pick of the quarter-final matches in Hamburg – it’s difficult to look past Sherif after such a convincing run, but Badosa will be out for revenge.
