Matej Dodig was handed a wildcard for the Croatia Open. The 20-year-old has reached two semi-finals on the Challenger Tour this season, but he is still ranked outside of the top 200 in the world. Dodig attempted to qualify for the first three majors of the season, but fell short on each occasion.
He now takes on veteran Pablo Carreno Busta in the first-round. The Spaniard finally picked up his first ever win at Wimbledon, and he was within touching distance of round three as he went up two sets to one against compatriot Rafael Jodar. However, the match was halted due to bad light, and Jodar raised his game a day later to complete a win in five sets. Carreno Busta has been competitive over recent weeks, as he also reached the round-of-16 at Roland Garros, losing to Jodar once more.
Carreno Busta last competed in Umag a decade ago, but he has reached the quarter-finals on two previous occasions. Dodig will look to extend the rallies against his older opponent, but Carreno Busta is the favourite.
