Maria Lourdes Carle reached the round-of-16 in Hamburg after beating home favourite Jule Neimeier in straight sets. The Argentine navigated her way through a tight first set, before racing clear in the second to win 7-5 6-2. Carle advanced to the quarter-finals of the KTC Ladies Open last week, and she now has five wins from her last six matches, including the qualifying stages.
She faces second seed Anhelina Kalinina next. The Ukrainian secured her spot in the next round after a largely comfortable win over Kaitlin Quevedo. Both players exchanged breaks at the start of the match, but Kalinina edged in front and went on to win 7-5 6-4. She broke on eight occasions in total. Kalinina returned to winning ways after her first-round defeat at the Iasi Open to Paula Badosa.
Carle has picked up results in recent weeks, but this is still a match that Kalinina will be expected to win. Nevertheless, she will have to be patient in the longer rallies.
