Mai Hontama earned a place in the next round of the Prague Open after getting past Diane Parry in straight sets. The qualifier was largely untroubled as she wrapped up a 6-4 6-0 win. This was Hontama’s second top 100 win in as many weeks, having also beaten Magda Linette in Athens. The Japanese is ranked 202 in the world.
Her next opponent is Lilli Tagger. The 18-year-old advanced through to the next round after a straight sets win over Gao Xinyu. Tagger was largely untroubled as she won 6-2 6-4 against the qualifier. She converted three out of her four break point opportunities. This was her second victory of the season over the Chinese player, having already beaten her in the qualifying stages of the Australian Open.
Tagger is higher ranked and possesses a powerful game, but Hontama will be full of confidence after her fine performance in the opening round of the tournament.
