Luca Van Assche staged a magnificent recovery to beat Dusan Lajovic in the first-round of the Croatia Open. The Frenchman looked set to be heading out of the tournament as he dropped the first set tamely and went 4-0 down in the second. Despite reeling off four games in a row, Van Assche was broken for the fifth time in the match to hand the advantage back to Lajovic. However, the Serb failed to serve it out and Van Assche would increase his level to win 2-6 7-5 6-4.
He will now take on compatriot Titouan Droguet in the round-of-16. He also came from a set down to defeat Alexander Blockx. Droguet was not broken in sets two or three and dominated the latter part of the encounter to win 3-6 6-2 6-0 after one hour and 53 minutes.
Van Assche has won their two previous meetings, but this will be their first match against each other on clay. There is little to separate the pair, and this could be decided in three sets.
