She dropped the first set and was forced to save two match points in the second set tiebreak. That proved to be crucial as she levelled the match up and raced clear in the third to win.
Her first-round opponent in this event is Zeynep Sonmez. She suffered an early exit at the French Open as she lost to Daria Kasatkina. The Turk was unable to produce a deep run at any of the clay court events, and her form has taken a slide ever since her run to the quarter-finals of the Merida Open.
She does lead the head-to-head after a win over Volynets at the US Open last year. However, the American does have a bit of momentum on her side following those battling wins in qualifying, and Sonmez could be vulnerable here.
