Jaime Faria advanced from the first-round of the Swiss Open as he came from a set down to beat three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The Portuguese fell behind after losing a tight first set on a tiebreak, but he regrouped well to win 6-7 (8) 6-4 6-4. Faria qualified for Wimbledon and reached the second-round; he has won five of his last six matches overall.
He will take on Casper Ruud next. The former world number two’s struggles at SW19 continued as he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the first-round. Ruud now returns to the Swiss Open in Gstaad, a tournament that he has won on two occasions. The Norwegian won in 2021 and retained his title the very next year.
Ruud leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Faria in the Davis Cup two years ago. Faria will take confidence from his recent displays, but Ruud’s consistency and proven pedigree on clay make him a deserved favourite.
