Hubert Hurkacz vs Holger Rune prediction

Hubert Hurkacz had to fight back from a set down against Zizou Bergs before running out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner in the first round in Basel.

Hurkacz was impressive on his first serve, winning 85% of those points, but it was actually the return game that decided the match, as he won far more points on Bergs’ serve than vice versa.

He now takes on Denmark’s Holger Rune in what will be only the second meeting between the pair. The only previous occasion came back in 2022, when Rune won in straight sets at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris, but it is hard to see that encounter having much bearing on this one.

Rune is returning from a serious Achilles injury, and his win on Monday was his first on the ATP Tour in over 12 months, having lost his opening matches in Japan and Shanghai, so it was well deserved.

He had to battle all the way against Frenchman Quentin Halys, winning a final-set tie-break to edge the victory. It will be interesting to see how his body holds up after that, but the 23-year-old should be fine.

That victory will see Rune rise massively in the rankings, and he will be eager to pick up any ranking points he can between now and the end of the year. He is full of motivation right now, even if he is still far from his best.

We can see this being a really hard-fought match, and there is every chance it also goes the distance. For that reason, while we marginally prefer Rune, we want to see more of his game before really getting behind him, and it is the games market that takes our pick here.
