Han Shi continued her development with another tour-level win at the Guangzhou Open, defeating Alevtina Ibragimova in straight sets. The 21-year-old, who defeated Alexandra Eala at the Wuhan Open earlier this month, won 6-4 6-4. She will now play Dayana Yastremska in the round-of-16.

The Ukrainian staged an incredible recovery to beat Katie Volynets in the opening round. Yastremska was 5-2 down in the deciding set but saved five match points as Volynets failed to serve out the match on three separate occasions. She completed the comeback in the tiebreak, winning 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7) after two hours and 44 minutes.

Yastremska has struggled this season and is yet to progress to the quarter-finals of a tour-level event in 2026. She will be the favourite to win this match, though her opponent does have home support on her side and has already shown how dangerous she can be to higher ranked players.
