- Scotland are returning to the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time in 28 years, after sealing their place in dramatic fashion on the final matchday. Two stoppage-time goals secured a 4-2 victory over Denmark, averting what had seemed a certain second-place finish behind the Danes.
- The Scots have graced eight previous editions, qualifying for six of the seven instalments held between 1974 and 1998. However, they have not been involved in the tournament since then.
- All eight of the Tartan Army’s World Cup campaigns ended in the opening round, with goal difference having cruelly denied them progression on three occasions.
