Haiti preview: Back on the map
Despite not being able to play their home games in Haiti, and manager Sebastien Migne having never been to the country due to the ongoing civil war, Haiti are at their second FIFA World Cup after 52 years away - and they have some marquee ties to play out in the group stages.
Haiti finished second behind Curacao in the second round of CONCACAF qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026 before they then managed to get past the likes of Costa Rica and Honduras in the third round to earn one of the more surprising qualifications for this summer’s tournament.
Haiti did spring a surprise in a pre-tournament friendly hammering of New Zealand, winning by four goals to nil before then succumbing to a 2-1 defeat to Peru.
Scotland preview: The Tartan Army
Steve Clarke and his Scotland side are heading to a first FIFA World Cup since 1998. The Tartan Army have qualified for UEFA EURO 2020 and UEFA EURO 2024 ahead of this one, which were their first tournaments since heading to France before the turn of the century - and yet the pressure remains on Clarke.
The former West Bromwich Albion is almost the caricature of an experienced, grizzled and often dour Scottish football manager, with an often overly cautious style of football leading to a fair bit of criticism, and yet he can probably lay very fair claim to being the best Scotland manager of all time.
Scotland have shown a bit more proactivity and efficiency in attack in their pre-tournament friendlies as they came from behind to hammer Curacao by four goals to one at Hampden Park before racing into a 4-0 lead against Bolivia before half-time, without extending that lead in the second-half.
Haiti team news: Isidor changes Haiti's attack
Wilson Isidor switching his international allegiance to Haiti has changed the dimension of their attack with the Sunderland striker expected to start up-front in a 4-4-2 alongside either Frantzdy Pierrot or Duckens Nazon, with the latter having enjoyed a better time of it in their pre-tournament games.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will be expected to start in the middle of the park alongside Danley Jean Jacques. The other big dilemma will be who starts on the opposite flank to Ruben Providence, with Louicious Deedson providing an assist for Isidor against Peru but Josue Casimir with a bit more pedigree in terms of playing for Auxerre in Ligue 1.
Predicted XI (4-4-2): Placide; Arcus, Ade, Delcroix, Experience; Casimir, Bellegarde, Jean Jacques, Providence; Nazon, Isidor

Scotland team news: Potentially more proactive
Throughout Steve Clarke's reign in charge of Scotland, he has preferred a back three but he did play with a four against the Bolivians and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him stick with that, with the importance being for the Scots to try and boost their goal difference ahead of games against Brazil and Morocco.
Billy Gilmour's issue is unfortunate for both the player and Scotland but it may simplify things in the middle of the park with Ryan Christie now able to partner Lewis Ferguson. The big call for Clarke will be in goal with Angus Gunn most likely to stay in ahead of 43-year-old Craig Gordon.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Gunn; Hickey, Hendry, McKenna, Robertson; Ferguson, Christie; McGinn, McTominay, Gannon-Doak; Adams

Key stats
- Haiti are participating in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 52 years, having made their sole appearance at the tournament in 1974.
- Haiti lost both of their previous FIFA World Cup matches against European opposition: 3-1 v. Italy in their debut match and 7-0 v. Poland in their second fixture at the 1974 finals.
- Scotland are appearing at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 28 years. The Scots have featured in eight previous editions, qualifying for six of the seven tournaments held between 1974 and 1998. They have not taken part since 1998, making this a long‑awaited return to the global stage.
- All eight of the Tartan Army’s World Cup campaigns ended in the opening round, with goal difference having cruelly denied them progression on three occasions.
- Scotland have lost their opening match in their last three FIFA World Cup participations. Their last victory in their opening fixture was a 5-2 triumph against New Zealand in 1982.
- Only two of Scotland’s 23 FIFA World Cup matches have finished 0-0: one against Brazil in 1974 and another against Uruguay in 1986.
- Craig Gordon is the oldest player at the 2026 finals, and at 43 years and 164 days on the day of this fixture, he could become the second‑oldest player ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup, behind Essam El Hadary, who was 45 years and 161 days old when he played for Egypt against Saudi Arabia on 25 June 2018.

Haiti vs Scotland prediction
The reason as to why this one is must-win for both sides is due to the standard of the rest of their group with five-time world champions Brazil joined alongside 2022 semi-finalists Morocco. Brazil and Morocco will both be expected to defeat Haiti and Scotland but with third-placed teams going through, three points may still be enough to reach the knockout stages. The issue for the Scots is that they will need to put their foot down in order to achieve a decent goal difference, but that isn’t necessarily their best attribute and, with more familiarity of the conditions, Haiti will be confident of stifling an already fairly stodgy Scottish attack. The Tartan Army should still get three points on the board but it may not be overly convincing.
