Frances Tiafoe vs Alex Michelsen prediction

Frances Tiafoe produced his best performance of the tournament so far as he knocked out 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to advance to the last eight at the US Open for the fourth time in his career. The 11th seed had lost six of his previous seven meetings with Medvedev, but he handled the big moments superbly, recovering when Medvedev served for the opening set before dominating the tiebreak. Tiafoe then took control of the second and saved a set point in another tight breaker to win 7-6 (1) 6-4 7-6 (6).

He now faces compatriot Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals. Michelsen is still yet to drop a set at the tournament as he reached his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final after beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry. He won 7-6 (6) 6-4 6-4. Michelsen has also defeated Brandon Nakashima and Daniel Merida.

Tiafoe leads the head-to-head 2-0 and is yet to drop a set against Michelsen, following victories in Dallas and Houston. The 28-year-old has plenty of experience in the latter stages at Flushing Meadows, along with a favourable record against his quarter-final opponent.
