Key stats

  • This is the first FIFA competition match between Flamengo and Bayern München.
  • Flamengo defeated European opposition in the group stage – 3-1 vs Chelsea – while Bayern overcame their opponents from South America – 2-1 vs Boca Juniors.
  • This is Flamengo’s first game against German opponents at a FIFA tournament, and Bayern’s first against a team from Brazil. The German club did face Cruzeiro in the old Intercontinental Cup in 1976, winning 2-0 at home and drawing 0-0 away.
  • Flamengo have now won eight and drawn three of their last 11 matches across all competitions (W8 D3 L0).
  • Prior to their loss against Benfica, Bayern München had won six and drawn three of their last nine matches in all competitions (W6 D3 L0).
  • Wallace Yan has scored in the last ten minutes of Flamengo’s last two matches after coming off the bench both times.
  • Three of Flamengo’s roster have played football in the German Bundesliga; Allan (Hertha BSC, 2016-17 and Eintracht Frankfurt, 2018-19), Bruno Henrique (Wolfsburg, 2016-17) and Guillermo Varela (Eintracht Frankfurt, 2016-17).
  • Flamengo defender Alex Sandro faced Bayern as a Juventus player in the second leg of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16, which the German side, featuring Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman, won 4-2 after extra time to advance 6-4 on aggregate.
  • Alex Sandro and Danilo were both starters for FC Porto against Bayern in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, which the Portuguese side won 3-1 at home, but both were absent when Bayern came back to take the tie with a 6-1 second-leg win in Munich.
  • Flamengo’s new signing Jorginho played for Italy in the UEFA EURO 2020 final against an England side featuring Harry Kane. Italy won on penalties after a 1-1 draw, despite Jorginho’s missed spot kick and one successfully converted by Kane.
  • Jorginho has been on the losing side twice against Bayern in UEFA Champions League knockout ties – for Chelsea in the 2019/20 round of 16 and Arsenal in the 2023/24 quarter-finals.
  • Bayern’s Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller both started in Germany’s 7-1 win against hosts Brazil in the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte, Müller opening the scoring. They went on to beat Argentina 1-0 in the final at Flamengo’s Maracanã stadium.
  • Flamengo head coach Filipe Luís was a member of the Chelsea squad that won the 2014/15 Premier League, his opposite number Vincent Kompany finishing as a runner-up with Manchester City.

Flamengo vs Bayern Munich prediction

Coached by former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, Flamengo began the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Esperance de Tunis to begin their group stages before coming from a goal down to dispatch of Chelsea by three goals to one. They then shared a 1-1 draw with LAFC in their final group game.

Vincent Kompany’s Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich began the group stages with a 10-0 annihilation of semi-professional outfit Auckland City. The Bavarians then managed to defeat Argentine giants Boca Juniors with a hard-fought 2-1 victory before suffering a surprising and frustrating 1-0 loss to Benfica.

Flamengo play with an intensity with the ball and will seek to play through an often susceptible Bayern side so this may well be quite a fun watch for the neutral in the knockouts.

Flamengo vs Bayern Munich tip: Over 2.5 goals
