Espanyol preview: Strong start for Espanyol

Espanyol, having stayed up on the final day of last season, have undergone a takeover over the summer with Burnley owner Alan Pace now in charge of the Catalans. There is a bit of excitement within the fan base and it has been a positive start to the 2025/26 La Liga campaign for the home team.

Espanyol started their season with a come from behind 2-1 defeat of Atlético Madrid before they then shared an entertaining 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad in the Basque Country. That was followed by a 1-0 win over Osasuna before the September international break a couple of weeks ago, too.

Mallorca preview: Tough start for Mallorca

Real Mallorca, with former Osasuna boss Jago Arrasate at the helm, narrowly missed out on a top eight finish and European qualification last season. The Balearic Islanders have looked to evolve their style with the former Osasuna manager taking over from now Mexico boss Javier Aguirre, but they have remained low-scoring and fairly tough to watch from a neutral perspective.

The Majorcans have endured a very tough start to the season in terms of their opposition, having suffered a 3-0 loss to Barcelona on the opening day before going into the break after a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in which they had been 1-0 up. In between that, they shared a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo, who beat them to a European spot last season.

Espanyol team news: No fresh changes

Espanyol have no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for this one, but the Catalans will be without defender Javi Hernandez, who has an ankle injury.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic; El Hilali, Fernando Calero, Leandro Cabrera, Carlos Romero; Pol Lozano, Edu Exposito; Dolan, Pere Milla, Javi Puado; Kike

Unavailable: Javi Hernandez (Injured)

Questionable:

Mallorca team news: Dani Rodriguez suspended

Mallorca will be without experienced midfielder Dani Rodriguez, due to suspension, which means that Pablo Torre could continue in the Mallorca starting eleven this weekend.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Leo Roman; Valjent, Antonio Raillo, Kumbulla; Mateu Morey, Sergi Darder, Manu Morlanes, Pablo Torre, Johan Mojica; Mateo Joseph, Muriqi

Unavailable: Dani Rodriguez (Suspended)

Questionable:

Espanyol vs Mallorca prediction

Mallorca will head to Catalonia with a belief that they are much better than their record of one point from three matches would suggest, and they would point to the tough run of fixtures they have had. Espanyol, though, are turning themselves into quite an entertaining team to watch in La Liga under Manolo Gonzalez. As a result, both teams scoring may well be a good a bet for this one in Barcelona this week.

Espanyol vs Mallorca tip: Both teams to score
