England team news: James a doubt

Spain team news: Seemingly fully fit
It looks as though Spain are heading into the final with a fully fit and available squad. Centre-back Laia Aleixandri has returned from her one-match suspension, whilst previous injury doubt Athenea del Castillo came off the bench and now appears fully fit.

England vs Spain prediction
Sarina Wiegman has reached five successive major tournament finals in a row, and three of them with England. The Lionesses were under pressure ahead of the tournament and began it poorly, whilst under a cloud, with a 2-1 loss to France. They recovered well in the groups with hammerings of the Netherlands and then Wales.
Spain, on the other hand, headed into the tournament as arguably, alongside the United States, the best team in the world and the reigning world champions, having beaten England in Australia in 2023. The Spanish were rampant through the groups with 14 goals scored in three matches against Portugal, Belgium and then Italy.
In the knockout stages, England have produced remarkable comebacks. They fought back from 2-0 down to take Sweden to penalties and then eventually win a 14-penalty shootout by three goals to two. They then equalised deep into second-half stoppage-time against Italy in the semis, before Chloe Kelly scored a rebound from her own penalty deep into extra-time to send England through.
In contrast, Spain dealt with their semi-final with consummate ease as they defeated hosts Switzerland by two goals to nil. That was then backed up by a slender and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Germany after extra-time, courtesy of a winning goal scored by Aitama Bonmati.
Not to discuss men’s football when previewing a women’s final, but there are a lot of similarities between this and the men’s tournament last season. A shoddy but talented England had enough quality to eventually squeeze themselves into the final, before they ran into a team that were and are simply better than them and have been throughout the summer. So, a similar outcome shouldn’t really be backed against.
