England team news: A few doubts

In their hard-fought clash with Sweden, the Lionesses had to deal with a few injury issues as defender Leah Williamson rolled her ankle in extra-time,but Sarina Wiegman has confirmed she will be fit for this one. Lauren James is also again a fitness concern.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Carter, Greenwood; Walsh, Stanway; James, Toone, Hemp; Russo

Questionable: Park (Injured), James (Injured)

Italy team news: Fully fit

As they head into their semi-final clash in Geneva this midweek, the Italians are blessed with what is a fully fit and available squad, and so it would make sense that they go unchanged from the eleven that defeated Norway in the quarter-finals the other day.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Giuliani; Oliviero, Salvai, Linari, Di Guglielmo; Caruso, Giugliano, Severini; Cantore, Girelli, Bonansea

Key stats

  • Italy won the previous two Women’s EURO final tournament matches between these teams; 2-1 in the third-place play-off in 1987 and 2-1 in the 2009 group stage.
  • They have met six times in Women’s EURO matches (including qualifying) overall with Italy winning on five occasions and one match finishing as a draw.
  • The last meeting between England and Italy in a major competition was the 2-1 success for the Italians in the group stage at Women’s EURO 2009. Since then, they have met in eight international matches with England winning six times (Italy one win and one draw).
  • The teams’ most recent meeting was a friendly on 27 February 2024 in Algeciras, Spain, which England won 5-1. Lotte Wubben-Moy opened the scoring with her first international goal, then Lauren Hemp scored twice to make it 3-0 before Ella Toone also got on the scoresheet. Italy’s consolation goal was scored by Michela Cambiaghi.
  • England are through to their seventh Women’s EURO semi-final. They have won three and lost three of three of their previous six ties.
  • This is the third successive edition in which England have reached the last four. They defeated Sweden 4-0 at this stage of the competition in 2022.
  • England have now reached at least the semi-finals in every Women's EURO and FIFA Women's World Cup since 2015.
  • England have lost only two of their last 15 Women’s EURO final tournament matches (W12 D1).
  • None of England’s 38 Women’s EURO final tournament matches have finished without a goal being scored.
  • England have scored 13 goals at Women’s EURO 2025, their second highest tally in a single edition after the 22 they netted in 2022.
  • England have had ten different goalscorers at Women’s EURO 2025 - the most they have had in a single edition.
  • England’s coach Sarina Wiegman has won the last two Women's EURO final tournaments (Netherlands 2017 and England 2022). She is the only coach to lead two different teams to the title.
  • Sarina Wiegman took part in her 15th Women's EURO game as a head coach against Sweden; equalling the record held jointly by former England coach Hope Powell and Germany's Tina Theune (Note: Wiegman missed the 2022 group win against Northern Ireland through illness and this is factored in the total).
  • An appearance for Lucy Bronze would be her 15th at Women’s EURO final tournaments, bringing her level with England’s current record-holder Karen Carney.
  • Italy are through to reach their first Women’s EURO semi-final since 1997. Overall, this is their seventh semi-final in this competition. They had reached the semis in six of the first seven editions but missed out six times in a row from 2001 to 2022.
  • Italy have won two and lost four of their previous six Women’s EURO semi-final ties. The successes came in their most recent appearances in 1993 (W 4-3 on pens vs Germany) and 1997 (W 2-1 vs Spain).
  • Italy have scored the first goal in all their four matches at Women’s EURO 2025.
  • Cristiana Girelli (three goals) is the first Italian player to score more than two goals in a Women’s EURO final tournament since Carolina Morace (four goals) in 1997.
  • Cecilia Salvai, Laura Giuliani and Barbara Bonansea all need one appearance to reach the landmark of ten Women’s EURO final tournament appearances for Italy.
  • Cristiana Girelli (35y 90d) is set to become the second oldest Italian player to make an appearance in the semi-finals after Elisabetta Vignotto (35y 176d vs Germany 1989) *note Vignotto also scored.
  • England’s Georgia Stanway and Italy’s Arianna Caruso both play for Bayern München, winning the German domestic double together in 2024/25.
  • England’s Esme Morgan was joined at Washington Spirit last month by Sofia Cantore, who thus became the first Italian to sign for an NWSL club.
  • Martina Piemonte is the only Italy squad member to have played for an English club, representing Everton in 2023/24.
  • No member of England’s squad has ever played for an Italian club.
  • England’s Anna Moorhouse was a team-mate of Italy’s Elena Linari at French side Bordeaux for a brief spell in 2020.
  • England striker Alessia Russo is of Italian descent.
  • England head coach Sarina Wiegman led the Netherlands to a 2-0 win against Italy in the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Valenciennes, France.

England vs Italy prediction

Having come into the tournament under a bit of a shadow due to some poor performances and issues off the pitch, England started poorly with a defeat to France, but they have squeezed their way into the semis with hammerings of the Dutch and Wales, before coming from 2-0 down to take Sweden to penalties and progress in a ridiculous shootout in which nine of the 14 penalties were not scored.

Italy have been blessed with being on the so-called ‘softer’ side of the draw, and they have managed to take advantage of that. They finished second in Group B, with a win, a draw and a defeat, before defeating Norway by two goals to one with a last gasp winner.

Italy will believe they can cause a vulnerable England some problems, but Sarina Wiegman’s side appear to simply have something stirring them again as they clash in the Swiss’ second-city.
