Key stats
- Title-holders England and 2021 champions Germany are the last two winners of this competition. Both are aiming to win their fourth U21 EURO title and England are trying to triumph at back-to-back tournaments for the second time having previously done so in 1982 and 1984.
- The teams met on Matchday 3 of the 2025 group stage with Germany coming out on top by two goals to one.
- They have met twice in the final previously. In 1982 when the final was played over two legs, England defeated West Germany 5-4 on aggregate (3-1 h, 2-3 a). In 2009 the Germany came out on top, with their 4-0 victory being the biggest win in a final in the history of the competition.
- This is England’s second successive appearance in the final. Germany have now reached the final in four of the last five editions (2017, 2019, 2021 and 2025)
- England have been successful in three of their previous four appearances in the final, most recently in 2023 when they defeated Spain 1-0. The exception is their 0-4 defeat against Germany in 2009.
- Germany have come out on top on three of their five final appearances, most recently in 2021 when they beat Portugal 1-0. Their last defeat in the final was in 2019 when they lost 1-2 against Spain.
- England have won ten of their last 12 U21 EURO final tournament matches (D1 L1). The only defeat coming against Germany on Matchday 3 of the 2025 finals (1-2).
- Germany have won all their five matches at the 2025 finals and are aiming to match England’s feat in the last edition of winning six out of six.
- Germany have scored at least three goals in four of their previous five matches at the 2025 finals.
- Germany’s Nick Woltemade has scored six goals so far at the 2025 finals and is one short of the record in a single final tournament (since the introduction of the group stage in 2000). The record is currently held by Marcus Berg (Sweden, 2009) and Luca Waldschmidt (Germany, 2019) with seven goals each.
England vs Germany prediction
These two sides faced off in the group stages of this competition with England suffering a 2-1 loss to a German side that have perhaps been consistently the strongest side in the tournament.
The Young Lions began the defence of their title in fairly unconvincing form with a defeat of Czechia in the group stages being followed up by a draw with Slovenia and then a loss to the Germans. In the knockouts, though, Lee Carsley changed the shape of his side and that has allowed them to be the better side against both 2023 finalists Spain as well as against the Netherlands.
Germany, on the other hand, haven’t had to adapt or adjust in the middle of the tournament, with an excellent and slick, attacking style of football throughout. After three wins from three in the groups, they then entertainingly defeated Italy by three goals to two after extra-time in the quarter-finals, before then hammering France by three goals to nil in the semi-finals.
Germany have arguably had the star of the tournament in Nick Woltemade and they appear full of goals, having notched 15 goals in five games. They have beaten England already but Carsley and England have showed a very commendable quality to learn and adapt as the tournament has gone on and, with their tournament-winning experience, siding with the English in an entertaining affair may well be a good value bet.
