Clara Tauson will look to build upon a much-needed return to her best in Athens.
The Dane has been woefully out of sorts recently but reached the last four on hardcourts in the Greek capital and will hope to kick on in Washington.
First up, the world number 30 meets the dangerous Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who does have a penchant for occasional giant-killing.
However, the inconsistent Italian hasn’t been flying of late with four straight defeats and very little match action since May, leaving her down at 69 in the rankings.
Tauson won their only previous meeting in straight sets at Roland-Garros back in 2020 and she should have the greater sharpness, although Elisabetta does have the ability to ignite on the day and cause problems.
