The Armenian snared the ranking upset with a 6-2 6-4 success over the Japanese.
The world number 224 will now face Petra Marcinko for a spot in the quarter-finals after the second seed was made to battle for a 6-2 3-6 6-4 win over Nadia Podoroska.
This will be their maiden meeting and it could be a bit of a scrap despite the clear rankings gulf with Marcinko 179 places better off on the WTA ladder.
