Burnley head into the end of 2025 in a desperate situation and in need of a victory as the Clarets take on an inconsistent but now out of form Newcastle United side at Turf Moor.

Burnley preview: Struggling Clarets

Following their promotion to the top-flight last season, with an incredibly impressive defensive record, Burnley did begin the season quite competitively but they have now drifted right down to the bottom end of the table and they are six points adrift of safety.

The Clarets have managed to end a long losing streak with back-to-back draws over the festive period. The Lancastrians shared a 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium before a goalless draw with Everton the other day.

Newcastle preview: Inconsistent Magpies

Newcastle United come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, as a result of a first-half volley scored by Denmark international wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

The Magpies have drifted into the bottom-half of the table and they have been in average form of late with Eddie Howe’s Tynesiders now having managed just two victories in their last nine matches across all competitions.

Burnley team news: Not yet for Esteve

Scott Parker has said that Maxime Esteve is edging closer to full fitness but said that he would only return to training on the day of the game and hopefully be back involved by the weekend.

Ireland international midfielder Josh Cullen has suffered a knee injury that Parker has said 'doesn't look good', while Joe Worrall remains a doubt after missing the clash with Everton.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Walker, Humphreys, Ekdal, Hartman; Laurent, Luis, Ugochukwu; Anthony, Flemming, Tchaouna

Unavailable: Tuanzebe (International duty), Esteve (Injured), Beyer (Injured), Roberts (Injured), Cullen (Injured), Mejbri (International duty), Amdouni (Injured), Foster (International duty)

Questionable: Worrall (Injured)

Newcastle team news: Plenty of injuries

Eddie Howe has confirmed that he is taking his time on a decision over the goalkeeper situation with the former AFC Bournemouth boss suggesting he needs to see that Nick Pope is 'back to his very best' before replacing Aaron Ramsdale.

However, he has also confirmed that their abundance of injury issues, including Svem Botman, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento are likely to remain in place for their trip across the north.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale;  Miley, Thiaw, Schar, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Barnes, Woltemade, Gordon

Unavailable: Ashby (Injured)

Questionable: Pope (Fitness), Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Burn (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Trippier (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Osula (Injured)

Burnley vs Newcastle prediction

Burnley lacked creativity and attacking quality last season, reliant on midfielder and captain Josh Brownhill for the bulk of their goals. Scott Parker has to be viewed as under pressure with Burnley perhaps ready to roll the dice at some stage in the second-half of the campaign. They face a Newcastle side that will believe they can still get themselves ahead with relative ease, even if they lack fluency and even if they have to be patient.

Burnley vs Newcastle tip: Newcastle to win -1 handicap
