Bologna preview: Entertaining Bologna

Coached by Vincenzo Italiano, Bologna begin this midweek round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top seven and the European spots with the 2025 Coppa Italia winners once again getting themselves on the front foot with an impressive style and form.

The home team have endured some recent poor form of late, though, with a 3-1 loss to league leaders Internazionale at the weekend meaning they haven’t won inside 90 minutes in their last five matches across all competitions.

Atalanta preview: Not so fluent Atalanta

Following the departure of Gian Piero Gasperini to Roma over the summer, Atalanta got the appointment of former Southampton boss Ivan Juric wrong but they have since improved once again with Gasperini disciple Raffaele Palladino now at the helm.

The Bergamasci made it three victories from their last four matches in Serie A the other day as they defeated the aforementioned Romans by a goal to nil at the Gewiss Stadium, courtesy of an early Giorgio Scalvini winner.

Bologna team news: No Bernadeschi

Federico Bernadeschi suffered a severe collarbone injury in their Supercoppa Italiana semi-final against Internazionale, while goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski is also unavailable.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Ravaglia; Holm, Heggem, Jhon Lucumi, Lykogiannis; Moro, Ferguson; Cambiaghi, Odgaard, Rowe; Castro

Unavailable: Skorupski (Injured), Bernadeschi (Injured)

Questionable:

Atalanta team news: Scalvini now a doubt

The match winner from the other day, Giorgio Scalvini, is now a doubt as an injury prone defender that he is. Both Odilon Kossounou and Ademola Lookman remain away at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Hien, Djimsiti, Ahanor; Zappacosta, De Roon, Ederson, Bernasconi; De Ketelaere, Maldini; Scamacca

Unavailable: Kossounou (International duty), Kolasinac (Injured), Bakker (Injured), Bellanova (Injured), Lookman (International duty)

Questionable: Scalvini (Injured)

Bologna vs Atalanta prediction

With their home advantage, Bologna will believe they can bounce back in terms of their form. The hosts have been able to get on the front foot when at their best but they have lacked much cutting edge of late, made worse by the absence of Bernadeschi. Atalanta haven’t been at their most fluent but, with Palladino’s side gradually improving, both in terms of performances and results, they could truly click soon and so both teams scoring would seem a good bet for this one.
