Bianca Andreescu failed to qualify for the French Open after a loss to Viktoria Hruncakova in the second stage. The Canadian, who won the US Open in 2019, has won two lower-level titles this season along with another final appearance. She did pick up a main draw win at the Italian Open, along with a second-round appearance in Charleston during the clay court season.

She faces Elise Mertens in the first-round. Mertens is the defending champion at this event. She dramatically saved a number of match points against Ekaterina Alexandrova in last year’s semi-final, before winning the final against Elena-Gabriela Ruse in relatively comfortable fashion. Mertens’ largely average season continued at Roland Garros as she lost in round two. The Belgian has still not reached a quarter-final on tour this season.

Andreescu does lead the head-to-head 2-0, but both of those victories were back in 2019 when she was at the peak of her powers. Mertens has a lot of points to defend here, and the pressure is on to perform.
