Three-time finalist Aryna Sabalenka finally got her bid for a maiden Stuttgart title underway with an impressive straight sets victory over Elise Mertens.
The Belgian was highly competitive in a tight first set but the world number one took charge at the business end and then ran away with it to post a 6-4 6-1 success.
Sabalenka was handed a walkover in the round of 16 and took time to settle and find her range against Mertens, but the three-time Grand Slam champion will now feel she is on the path to end her final hoodoo in this tournament with Iga Swiatek suffering a shock exit to Jelena Ostapenko.
Standing in Sabalenka’s way of another showdown for the trophy is fifth seed Jasmine Paolini.
The 29-year-old Italian set up a seventh career meeting with Sabalenka courtesy of an excellent 6-4 6-3 win over fourth seed Coco Gauff.
The Belarusian leads the head-to-head 4-2 and has won the last three encounters without dropping a set. This will be their first clash on clay and Paolini was the runner-up at Roland-Garros last year, but Sabalenka boasts a 12-4 record in Stuttgart where she has never lost a semi-final.
The top seed’s power is often too much for her opponents and the conditions at this tournament suit her, which should see the 26-year-old have too much for the diminutive Italian’s counter punching hustle.
