Anna Bondar booked her spot in the last eight of the Hamburg Open after mounting a late comeback to beat Noma Noha Akgue in three sets. The Hungarian looked to be heading out at the round-of-16 stage as Noha Akgue broke in the ninth game of the deciding set to serve for the match. However, Bondar would win the last three games to seal a 6-1 3-6 7-5 win after two hours and 41 minutes. She is two matches away from a third successive appearance in the final of this tournament.
She will have to get past Alina Charaeva first. Charaeva also came back from the brink as she defeated Sinja Kraus in three sets. Kraus led after the first set and served for the match in the second, but Charaeva reeled off three games in a row to level the encounter. Kraus was a break up once more in the third set, but the 24-year-old escaped once more to win 5-7 7-5 7-5. The Armenian is into the first tour-level quarter-final of her career.
Neither player was entirely convincing in the previous round, but Bondar finds a way to win at this event.
