Daniel Zellhuber: Can the Mexican prospect deliver a show stopping performance befitting of a huge favorite?

It’s been a rough run of recent form for Mexico’s Daniel Zellhuber (15-3). Despite beginning his UFC run at a respectable 3-1, the 26 year old hasn’t tasted victory in more than two years. A crowd pleasing striker with a penchant for entertaining brawls, Zellhuber is best known for a FOTY contender against Esteban Ribovics at the Sphere; a fight where he had his moments, only to ultimately find himself on the wrong end of a decision defeat. However, it’s his most recent defeat that likely left an even sourer taste in his mouth. Despite closing as an enormous favorite, Zellhuber would drop a second consecutive decision to veteran, Michael Johnson, in a grudge match notable for venomous pre-fight trash talk from both sides.

King Green: What does the 50 fight veteran have left in the tank after snapping his loss streak last time out?

A UFC competitor for more than a decade, King Green (33-17-1, 1 NC) enters this match up after successfully arresting a brutal two fight skid against Lance Gibson Jr. in his most recent appearance. Prior to that, Green had found himself on the wrong end of a KOTY contender against Mauricio Ruffy and a brutal technical submission defeat to Paddy Pimblett. A slick boxer who primarily relies on his speed and head movement for defense, Green was once regarded as one of the trickier tests in the division but has arguably never been the same since a KO defeat to Jalin Turner in 2023, a result that is widely touted as a frontrunner for the most egregious late stoppage in UFC history.

Daniel Zellhuber vs King Green prediction

“King” has taken an unholy amount of damage over the course of more than 50 professional MMA fights, to the point that it’s easy to see one of Zellhuber's shots catching Green and putting him out badly; a likely factor in why the Mexican prospect is a heavy favorite heading into this one.

However, Zellhuber does not give the impression that he’s ever going to become a serious contender. His UFC wins are over fairly mediocre competition and he’s only scored a single finish during that time, despite owning a near 100% stoppage rate prior to joining the promotion. He's consistently demonstrated questionable fight IQ, matching his opponent's pace and easing off the pressure when he should be applying it.

As such, while question marks justifiably linger over Green’s durability, “Golden Boy” doesn’t look to be the sort of fighter who is going to deaden the American with a single murderous shot in the vein of a Ruffy or a Turner. Furthermore, he also doesn't have the grappling to dispose of the American a la Makhachev or Pimblett. “King” is still lightning fast and has always been an excellent boxer, attributes that Michael Johnson leaned on successfully to earn the decision against Zellhuber in his last fight.

Green has had some brutal losses throughout his career, but most of them have come against fighters that would likely have their way with Zellhuber; he's typically done well against slower, kick-heavy strikers. This take may age like milk given that a single clean shot could well leave the American staring up at the lights, but the pick is for "King" to stymy his opponent across three rounds to produce a sizable upset.

Prediction: King Green to win by decision
