Kyle Prepolec: Will "Killshot" rebound from a disappointing UFC debut?
Kyle Prepolec (18-9) arguably exceeded expectations in his debut defeat to Benoit St Denis at UFC 315. Despite not having fought in over a year, “Killshot” was called in on late notice to replace Joel Alvarez and actually acquitted himself fairly well, landing a couple of good shots on the plodding BSD before getting submitted with an arm-triangle in the second round. The 36 year old Canadian has fourteen finishes in eighteen wins, but his strength of schedule is nothing to write home about. This is Prepolec’s second run in the promotion, quietly washing out after going 0-2 in 2019.
Drew Dober: What does the UFC's lightweight staple have left in the tank?
A universal fan favorite courtesy of his iron chin, heavy hands, and love for the brawl, Drew Dober (27-14) enters this contest off the back of the first three fight skid of his career, with many questioning whether the American’s numerous wars in the promotion have finally caught up to him. Dober’s approach has always been simple; he’s going to march forward throwing heavy leather, and if you don’t finish him, he’s going to knock you stiff. However, the American is just 1-4 since a monstrous knockout win over King Green, with three of those defeats coming by way of stoppage.
Kyle Prepolec vs Drew Dober prediction
This one essentially comes down to what Dober has left in the tank.
The American may be 0-3 in his last three fights, but it’s worth noting that those losses came against Renato Moicano, Jean Silva, and Manuel Torres; Dober isn’t exactly getting blown out of the water by unproven levels of competition. Torres is the weakest name in that trio by far, and he’s still 4-1 in the promotion with all wins coming by way of finish.
By contrast, Prepolec may have been on a three fight finish streak before running into BSD in his debut, but those wins came against complete cans on the regional circuit. Back in the day, “Killshot” was losing to the likes of Nordine Taleb and Austin Hubbard in his first UFC run, competition that the Dober of old would have obliterated in short order.
The American’s legendary chin may be finally starting to crack, but unless the wheels have well and truly fallen off, this is still a fight that he should win. Dober is likely to start cautiously in light of his recent run of form, but once he realizes he can take what Prepolec is throwing at him, he’ll have the confidence to let his heavy hands fly.
The tentative pick is Dober by second round KO.
Prediction: Drew Dober to win
