Jim Miller: Can the ageless veteran turn back the clock one more time?

UFC legend Jim Miller (38-19) makes his 47th walk into the UFC octagon this Saturday. The man holds the record for 1. The most UFC fights in history, and 2. The most UFC wins in history (27). The 42-year-old extended his record for most wins two fights ago with a submission over Damon Jackson, before dropping a unanimous decision to Chase Hooper last April, a loss that hasn’t aged particularly well. Miller is extremely tough, going the distance in losses to Bobby Green and Anthony Hernandez, fighters who finish much younger prospects, and surviving extended periods with Chase Hooper on his back, another impressive feat. Miller possesses a nasty guillotine, sharp boxing combinations, and the kind of ring IQ that only comes with 46 UFC appearances. Unfortunately, age is the only thing he can’t negotiate with.

Jared Gordon: “Flash” looks to put on a dirty boxing clinic

Jared Gordon (21-8) has been frustratingly inconsistent in recent years. The 37-year-old New Yorker has split his last two outings, knocking out Thiago Moises last May before dropping a decision to Rafa Garcia in September. Gordon’s career has been defined by wild swings, arguably beating Paddy Pimblett in vastly disputed decision, only to follow it up with losses to the likes of Nasrat Haqparast. He’s a dirty boxer who thrives in the chaos of a sluggish brawl, plodding forward with thudding shots rather than snappy, mixing in calf kicks and looking for slip counters in the pocket. Gordon’s boxing defence is average, and he’s heavy on his front foot, leaving him vulnerable to calf kicks himself.

Jim Miller vs Jared Gordon prediction

The bookies seem to be writing Miller off as the ageing veteran, but this fight is much closer than the odds suggest. Despite the 42 VS 37 age gap, Miller is arguably the more physical fighters and certainly carries the bigger finishing threat. His sharp boxing, reactive guillotine, and grappling ability give him more ways to win that Gordon, who’s largely a one-dimensional boxer.

In Gordon’s loss to Rafa Garcia, he threw an overhand into a leg pick attempt, and Garcia caught him in a guillotine that he couldn’t finish. I think Miller finishes it there, and I see that scenario playing out this weekend. Gordon’s tendency to brawl in the pocket also plays into Miller’s hand to get easy takedowns.

If Miller can keep the fight at the tip of his range, mix in his grappling, and avoid getting drawn into a sluggish war, I see him getting the victory. The concern is whether age has caught up with him in the later rounds, and he gets outworked on volume. With his experience and ring IQ, I see Miller playing this smart, and getting his hand raised.

Prediction: Jim Miller to win
