UEFA Champions League 2025-26: quarter-final breakdown and who’s tipped to lift the trophy

The new-look UEFA Champions League has delivered one of the most dramatic knockout rounds in memory, and after a round of 16 defined by blowouts and comebacks, just eight teams remain standing. Arsenal — the only side with a perfect league phase record — lead the charge, but a loaded bracket means the road to Budapest will be anything but straightforward.

With the quarter-finals locked in, we now have a clearer picture of who might be lifting the trophy at the Puskas Arena on 30 May.

The team at Gambling.com, a platform recognised for its sports betting analysis as well as its reviews of new online casino sites in the UK, see Arsenal’s odds as still representing genuine value at this stage of the competition. “Arsenal at +220 looks short on paper, but their underlying numbers are extraordinary,” a spokesperson said. “Five goals conceded in ten Champions League matches is a defensive record that historically correlates very strongly with teams that go on to win the tournament.”

Quarter-final fixtures at a glance

The semi-final paths are already mapped: Paris Saint-Germain/Liverpool vs Real Madrid/Bayern on one side, Barcelona/Atletico vs Sporting/Arsenal on the other. Final: 30 May, Budapest.

The favourites: Arsenal and Bayern Munich

Arsenal (+220 | 9/4) — Eight games, eight wins, 23 goals scored, four conceded in the league phase. A 3-1 aggregate win over Leverkusen in the R16. Across ten CL matches this season: 26 goals, five conceded, six clean sheets. Gabriel Martinelli has been electric (six goals), supported by Gyökeres (four) and Madueke (three). Their 85.9% passing accuracy is among the best in the competition. They face Sporting — a team they hammered 5-1 in last season’s league phase. If there was ever a kind draw, this is it.

Bayern Munich (+340 | 10/3) — The headline: ten-two. Bayern’s aggregate demolition of Atalanta was the most one-sided R16 tie in CL history. Harry Kane became the first Englishman to reach 50 CL goals. The numbers: 32 goals in ten matches (3.2 per game), 58.5% possession, 90.3% passing accuracy. The concern? Ten goals conceded and just two clean sheets. They must tighten up — their quarter-final opponents are Real Madrid.

The contenders: Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid

Barcelona (+470) — 7-2 against Newcastle at Camp Nou in the second leg (8-3 agg), Lewandowski and Raphinha both scoring braces. Devastating in attack but defensive questions linger — 14 goals conceded in the league phase, more than any other remaining side bar Atletico. All-Spanish QF against Atlético is the tie of the round.

Paris Saint-Germain (+500) — Defending champions. 8-2 aggregate over Chelsea — including a 5-2 first-leg masterclass. Face Liverpool in arguably the most evenly matched QF.

Real Madrid (+750) — 15 CL titles. You can never write them off. 5-1 aggregate over Man City. Valverde’s stunning first-half hat-trick in the first leg was the individual performance of the round. At 7/1, there could be value here.

The outsiders

Liverpool (+950) — 3rd in league phase (18 pts), overturned a first-leg deficit against Galatasaray with a 4-0 Anfield display. But Paris Saint-Germain have beaten them in two of three recent European meetings.

Atletico Madrid (+2000) — Survived a 7-5 thriller vs Spurs. Under Simeone, still unbeaten at home in CL knockout ties. Will relish the Barcelona derby.

Sporting CP (+4500) — Comeback of the round: trailing 3-0 from the first leg against Bodo/Glimt, they stormed back with a 5-0 extra-time win in Lisbon. Heart is there, but Arsenal is a huge step up.

Prediction: who lifts the trophy in Budapest?

The bracket favours Arsenal. Sporting in the QFs, then Barcelona or Atletico in the semis. On the other side, at least two of Real Madrid, Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool will be eliminated before the last four.

Arsenal’s defensive record is the best in the competition — five goals conceded in ten games. Their league phase perfection showed a consistency none of the others can match. Add a nine-point PL lead and EFL Cup final momentum, and the Gunners look the complete package.

Bayern are the biggest threat but must navigate Real Madrid first — a 50-50 at best.

The pick: Arsenal to lift the trophy in Budapest
